SEO is not dead. It did not pack a bag and quietly leave because ChatGPT arrived.
People still use search engines. They also ask longer, more conversational questions in AI tools. That is why AEO keeps showing up in marketing conversations.
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization helps a website get crawled, indexed, understood, and shown for relevant searches. It includes technical health, useful content, page structure, links, local business information, and the overall experience of using the site.
SEO gives a page a chance to appear. The search engine still decides what to show, and the person still decides what to click.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization focuses on whether your content can support a useful answer in tools such as ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Google AI features.
Those answers may include one source, several sources, links, or a list of businesses. AEO cannot determine the result. It improves the clarity and usefulness of the material available to the system.
SEO helps the page get found. AEO asks whether the page contains an answer worth using.
Where do they overlap?
- Useful, original content written for people
- Pages that crawlers can access and search engines can index
- Clear headings, descriptive titles, and working internal links
- Accurate business details across the website and outside listings
- Credible sources and third-party references
For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, the company says there are no extra technical requirements beyond being eligible for Search with a snippet. It also says there is no special schema.org markup required for those AI features.
Where does the work differ?
AEO pays more attention to conversational questions and direct, self-contained answers. It also includes testing how different tools describe the business and checking whether those answers cite accurate sources.
The testing is less stable than a traditional ranking report. The same prompt can produce a different answer later, in another location, or for another person. That is why a single screenshot is not a strategy.
Do you need both?
Start with the foundation. If the website is thin, slow, confusing, or missing from local search, fix that first. Clear pages and accurate listings help people, traditional search, and AI-assisted search.
If the foundation is sound, add answer-focused work. Review the questions clients ask before they call. Publish useful answers. Check how AI search tools describe the business. Correct the source material you control.
What should you stop doing?
Stop treating schema as a magic ranking code. Stop writing FAQ pages for robots. Stop promising that a business will become the answer in a set number of weeks.
Structured data is useful when it accurately describes the visible page. FAQ content is useful when a real person needs the answer. Neither one forces an AI tool to cite you.
The practical answer
SEO and AEO are not competing projects. They are two views of the same question: can the right person find, understand, and trust this business?
Build the website for people first. Make it crawlable. Make the facts consistent. Answer real questions. Then test what the AI tools are doing without pretending you control them.
Questions about AEO and SEO
Will AEO replace SEO?
No. AI search still depends on accessible, useful web content. SEO remains the foundation for crawlability, indexing, local visibility, and strong pages.
Does every small business need an AEO project?
No. A business with a weak website or incorrect local listings should fix those first. AEO work makes more sense after the basics are working.
Which AEO signal matters most?
No public source gives one universal ranking formula. Clear, useful content and sound technical access are the safest place to start because they help people and search systems at the same time.
Should therapists focus on local search too?
Yes. Location, licensure, directory profiles, referral relationships, and Google Business Profile information still matter. AI visibility should add to that work, not replace it.
