Some future clients still search Google. Some ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or another AI tool for help. The answer may include links, a short list of businesses, or a direct recommendation.

Answer Engine Optimization, usually shortened to AEO, is the work of making your business easier for those systems to find, understand, and cite.

A plain-language definition of AEO

AEO is the practice of improving your website and online presence so answer tools can understand what you do and use your content when it is relevant.

It is not a switch. It does not guarantee a citation or recommendation. OpenAI says there is no way to guarantee top placement in ChatGPT Search. Google says the same SEO foundations used for Search still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode.

AEO is not a secret code for making AI choose you. It is clear content, sound technical work, accurate business information, and proof that holds up when someone checks it.

How is AEO related to SEO?

SEO helps pages get crawled, indexed, understood, and shown in search results. AEO pays closer attention to the questions people ask in conversational tools and whether your content gives a useful, quotable answer.

The overlap is large. Helpful content, crawlable pages, clear headings, internal links, accurate business information, good page experience, and credible outside references help both. Google is explicit about this. There is no special schema or AI file required to appear in its AI features.

What about GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is another name you will hear. People do not use these terms consistently. A useful working distinction is that AEO focuses on direct answers while GEO looks more broadly at visibility and citations in generated responses.

The practical work overlaps. You still need clear facts, useful content, crawlable pages, and an online presence that does not contradict itself.

Why does this matter now?

The audience is no longer theoretical. Google reported in June 2026 that AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly active users. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users earlier in the year.

That does not mean traditional search disappeared. It means people now have more than one way to look for help. Your website needs to make sense in both places.

What does useful AEO work include?

Clear business language

Say what the business is, who it serves, what it offers, and where it works. A clever tagline cannot carry all of that by itself.

Helpful answers

Write the questions people actually ask. Answer them with enough detail to be useful. Do not write for a crawler at the expense of the person reading.

Sound technical foundations

Make important content available as text. Allow the crawlers you want. Use internal links. Keep pages fast and usable. Structured data can help search engines understand a page and support eligible rich results, but it must match the visible content and it does not guarantee placement.

Consistent facts

Your name, location, credentials, services, and contact details should agree across your website and professional listings. That matters to clients before it matters to a machine.

Sources worth citing

Specific, original, well-supported content gives search tools something useful to reference. A vague page full of promises does not.

How long does AEO take?

There is no reliable fixed timeline. A crawler has to find the change. The search system has to process it. The answer still depends on the question, the location, the available sources, and the tool being used. Google says recrawling can take several days to several months.

Anyone promising a guaranteed ranking, citation, or four-week result is promising something they do not control.

Questions people ask about AEO

How do you define AEO?

AEO is the work of making content easier for answer tools to find, understand, and cite when it is relevant. It combines solid SEO, clear answers, accurate business information, and useful source material.

Where do AEO and SEO differ?

SEO covers visibility in traditional search results. AEO looks more closely at visibility inside generated answers. The work overlaps. Google says the same SEO foundations apply to its AI features and no special AI markup is required.

Do therapists and private practice owners need AEO?

They should understand it if potential clients use AI tools to research care. Start with an accurate, useful website and consistent professional information. Do not replace local SEO, directory profiles, or referral relationships with an AEO promise.

Can I do the basics myself?

Yes. You can clarify your business description, improve service pages, answer real client questions, and correct inconsistent listings. Technical changes such as crawl controls or structured data may need help, depending on your website.
